Mystery epidemic devastates Central American... →
The roots of the epidemic, scientists say, appear to lie in the grueling nature of the work performed by its victims, including construction workers, miners and others who labor hour after hour without enough water in blazing temperatures, pushing their bodies through repeated bouts of extreme dehydration and heat stress for years on end. Hmm, kidney failure from dehydration and hot...

LIVESTRONG has just donated $100k to Planned Parenthood as a response to the Komen Foundation’s cut of funds to PP. However, since there was such a strong backlash, now the Susan G. Komen Foundation is going to restore funding. That was quick. If everyone speaks up at the same time and strongly, things get done. First SOPA was knocked down, and now this. I like.

This year's Chirstmas gift was a meditation...
Last summer, Vania and I had a conversation about meditation after her experience in Nepal. She recommended me to do one, and like most things Vania recommends, I agreed. We signed up for a Vipassana meditation retreat but in two different countries. She did hers in Mexico the 2nd and 3rd week of December and mine was from Dec 21st to Jan 1st. As the starting date came closer, I became more...

The kids I work with are so inappropriate sometimes! I was in the teacher’s computer room when two kids walked in. They came to drop off materials and one of them stopped by the life size science skeleton. He grabbed the hand and start imitating masterbation on the skeleton. Then the two boys started laughing at my reaction. I told them that they were inappropriate/immature and I ignored...

boricuayari asked: Hi! I wrote you before about being able to ask you questions about the auxiliares programme. I was very excited to apply until I read some things online about problems auxiliares were having. Plus, the application process is a bit daunting/confusing. I'd really love to talk to someone who is currently in the program and who went through the process already who could give me a firsthand...

Interesting fact of the day. Estimates of the US population show that by 2025, 30% of all American children will be of Latino ancestry. We should start calling all the kids Juan, Pablo, Juanita, and Lupita just for the hell of it.

WTF! →
A guy in a silver Mercedes-Benz hit two protesters in Oakland, CA and the police didn’t detain him. They let him drive off. I guess hitting people with a car is now acceptable in the US.

President of Guatemala “requests the forgiveness” of the family of Jacobo Arbenz, a leftist who was violently removed from power in a coup backed by the CIA. Can the US also apologize for engineering the coup? They already apologized for the STD studies conducted in Guatemala in the 1940’s, the should apologize for the coup in 1954.

Being a vegetarian in Spain is pretty hard. I also really love spicy food which is pretty much non-existent here. There isn’t much diversity in food either. I went to the “international food” aisle at Al Campo and I was very disappointed. Although I love tortilla patatas and champys, I feel like I’m eating the same stuff all the time. I think what makes up for the lack of...

Funny things kids ask me
Today was the second day that I’ve worked at school San Lorenzo in Ezcaray but I’ve already received a ton of weird questions. My favorite ones are…. Are you President Obama’s Daughter? Are you friends with President Obama? Have you seen Osama Bin Laden? Did you see the twin towers fall? Have you had any surgery? Do you have a boyfriend? Did you take a boat to get...
